No relationship at all, I'd say. However, Proinsias Ó Maonaigh translated Maguire's words into Irish and called the result 'An Spailpín Fánach' - that is perhaps what you are thinking of. JimK's grandmother's recollection of the song confirms that a form of this version of it was current in Ireland at least in the early years of the 20th century, so it may well be that Maguire didn't have to look too far from home for his raw material after all.
