Eric the Viking, may I assume that the Garratt in Manchester you are referring to is that in the Manchester Museum of Science and Technology? If so, they are holding celebrations to mark the centenary of the Garratt; click here Unfortunately, the Museum's exhibit will never run on the railway network in Britain; it was built for South African railways and has a 3' 6" gauge. I have stood on its footplate; all that could be seen ahead was the back of the water tank mounted on the leading engine. Garratts were never really popular with railwaymen in Britain. See links for the LNER Class U1 and LMS Garratt.
