The main problem they are facing (at the moment) is containment of the plasma. This is achieved by use of very large supercooled magnets which are also used to speed up the plasma round the reactor. Enclosing plasma under these circumstances has been described as "like holding spaghetti with elastic bands" It is a long shot but the advantages of this are vast! Cheap and carbon free energy is definitely a goal worth trying for!
