Thanks to all who have asked, and special thanks to Cliff who offered the loan of a good guitar (that would be a first for me !) It was just the machine head on the 3rd string. The string had been slipping for a day or two, I thought it was the winding, and needed new strings. When I tried to put them on, the machine finally gave up the ghost. Luckily the ex-hubby lent me a mini-Grover to tide me over until the new set I ordered off t'internet arrives - don't you just love e-bay - and see, I do have a good word for him now and then!!!
