For me the key paragraph in Stephens article was "In other words, if you're prepared to manipulate history as dishonestly as our vile little "play" about black America does, then it's easy to draw a damning moral. And if you're clever enough to cast the indictment as a story about some blacks or some Jews, or as one of generational decadence, then you might also acquit yourself of charges of racism or anti-Semitism, since you can point to a few Jews or blacks worthy of your considered respect" This represents the point where Stephens shifted the argument from being a criticism of Israel / the Israeli State (as I understood Ms.Churchill's play to be, from his description of it) to a more familiar old accusation of anti-semitism. In other words, Stephens leaves us with a stark choice: either admit we are racists or else shut up and let the Israeli Authorities get on with making life hell for Palestinians without comment. Nice one, Stephens.
