Although this great Indian musician has been reported on one or two sites on the web as having died yesterday, the family advises that he is still alive but in a deep coma, and is slowly making his way across to the other side. He founded the Ali Akbar College of Music in Calcutta in 1956, and some ten years later opened another branch in Northern California, where he frequently taught. His passing will mark the end of an era in Indian classical music, leaving only his contemporary (and at one time brother-in-law) Ravi Shankar atill with us from that generation of Indian musicians.
