funny coincidence about the word "mangled" I mentioned to a friend that a computer spellcheck rather than a human proofreader must have been responsible for the spelling "put through the ringer" in a recent NYTimes interview with writer Jodi Picoult. My friend said maybe a young proofreader would have no knowledge of wringers for drying clothes. I said I had one of those gadgets in the 1970s and it was called a "mangle"
