AN autistic 21-year-old who has a fascination with trains and travel is still missing from his Ware home.

Fears are growing for the well-being of "mild-mannered" Liam Gibson, who disappeared last Friday after he called his family to say he was getting on a bus home, but never returned.

Police hunting for vulnerable Liam, of Fanshawe Crescent, are particularly concerned after it was discovered his mobile phone is being used by someone in Stoke Newington, north London.

It is not the first time the 21-year-old has gone missing from home; in the past he has been found at Heathrow airport, in Cambridge and Harlow, but last time he went missing he became ill after not eating or drinking.

His fascination with the train, tube and bus network means he is most likely to be spending his days travelling around and sleeping rough at night. He has a free bus pass, but did not have any money on him.

Liam's stepfather Damien Scully, 45, said: "Liam is a happy and easy-going person – he helps out around the house and plays with his 17-month-old sister Madison.

"We have recently been trying to build up Liam's independence – he has been taking himself to and from Hertford Regional College and we want him to have as much freedom as possible."
Liam went shopping to the Brookfield Centre in Cheshunt on the 12 June on a Friday with his stepfather, mum Tina Goodman and sister. He was dropped off at a barbers' shop in Crossbrook Street to go for a haircut, although police believe he did not go to the shop.

Liam called his stepfather on his mobile phone at around 11.45am to say he was getting the bus home, but never returned.

Mr Scully said: "When we dropped him off on Friday he was very cheery and looking forward to getting his hair cut. Nothing happened that we can think of that would have made him go off.

"We are trying not to panic, but obviously we are worried if he is not eating or drinking anything and could be meandering around unsafe places late at night."

The family used to live in Cheshunt before moving to Ware around five years ago and Liam went to Pinewood School in Ware for children with special educational needs.

Detective Inspector Stuart Orton, of Herts police, said: "We are working with the British Transport Police, the Met and Transport for London to try to trace Liam.

"He may be boarding trains in the morning rush hour so he is not detected – he is fascinated with trains and may be on the tube network."

Liam is described as white, 5ft 11in (1.8m) tall with short brown hair and unshaven. He was last seen wearing a grey Lonsdale fleece, a green T-shirt, blue jeans and white Velcro trainers. He also bites his nails.
• Anyone with any information is asked to call Det Insp Orton on 0845 3300 222 or the Missing People charity on 0500 700700.
