Maybe if the school had concerns they could have discussed them with Motley Morris to see if they could come up with some kind of solution acceptable to both rather than just cancelling? From descriptions I've seen about the origins of the blackface it's always sounded to me like just some black was smeared/streaked over the face, not necessarily completely covering it. If this was the case, maybe the full face cover developed when minstrel acts became popular? On a wider note, a mate of mine came up with the observation that you're not being non-racist when you're being considerate of his skin colour and what might offend him.
