Those fine tuners that you use on the tailpiece are only for steel strings (like Thomastik). That is why the standard violin only has one on the "e" string. I think it takes less skill to tune a violin with machine heads than it does with pegs; but it is also slower. Sorcha, I use one of those usual plastic peg winders with my classical guitar with the tuning handles perpendicular to those of steel string ones.There is a gunk you can put on pegs to make them move smoother and make them lock better. It is used by "respectable" professional violinists. I have some with my late wife's violin which is not here at the moment. I will look up the name next time.
