I knew some Chemistry students who formed a punk band named "Hoffman Degredation". It's a chemical process by which an organic amide is converted to an amine, and involves the loss of a carbon molecule from the alliphatic carbon chain. <yawn> By the time they had explained the origin of their name, for all I know with chalk and overhead projectors (no PowerPoint presentations in those days, thankfully), the gig was almost over.
