A quick search tells me that Northwestern University has a terrific set of maps from 1650 on that you can zoom in on and then print, like zoom in on a country and print it in fair detail, the get another country etc. Of course, the countries aren't what they were when I was in school which was shortly after 1650, so there are a lot of different maps. It looks like a good resource anyway. Africa maps
