Fred was a terrific person-- a good host, a good singer, and a fine songwriter. I played the Great River Festival with Bill Shute and remember coming out ahead, gigging with Fred in Mineral Point, and staying with at his wonderful while we did some students concerts. We talked a lot about his aspirations for the festival. Sometime after 9/11 I heard him on Amy Goodman and was delighted he was still actively performing. I remember his song" Homemade Bread and Cheese/Lots of butter if you Please/ These are the simple Things." I'm sad, even though we have not recently been in touch, knowing he no longer on the folk music map. A sweet and intelligent man.
