I first heard Luke sing this in August 1969 at the Cambridge Folk Festival. It brought a stunned silence to a slightly boisterous audience - such was the power and passion of Luke. A few years later he sung it to a large and even more boisterous stident audience at the Univeristy of Aston in Birmingham, with a similar effect. No one else comes near to this - and I have asked for it to be played at my funeral !!!!! There is a DVD of live Luke Kelly performances, and he sings it on that. And to answer someone else's enquiry from years back, the late Dave Phillips never recorded it, but his is a tremendous version learned from Luke (his best friend during his Birmingham days). Luke learned many of his songs from Dave - including Peggy Gordon.
