I don't think Richard Dyer-Bennet is any more "the real thing" than the Kingston Trio.
The Trio were pop-types doing folk-like arrangements while Dyer-Bennet was an arty/opera-type doing folk-like arrangements. Both were pretty phoney.
One of the worst records I ever heard was Richard Dyer-Bennet singing the blues song "I'm A Poor Boy A Long Way From Home."
