Thanks for the info on "goner." We use it in the same way, actually, but an American wouldn't modify it with "fair" and "clean." That's why it sounded strange to me.

What about the second line:
To save a bit of my plan
Is there a word missing there?
On a recording I have of the song, it sounds like
To save a bit of oots my plan
but that makes no sense to me.
Context suggests that it means "my intention being to economise."
