Another: A high school basketball tournament, a simple elimination tourney, involves 72 schools. How many games must be played for a winner to emerge? No math is required other than 72-1=71 games. In order for one team to end up the winner, the other 71 teams have to lose. I say the answer is one game. You didn't ask how many games must be played to determine the champion or the ultimate winner or even THE winner. You said "a winner". Whoever wins the first game is the winner of the first game, thus, a winner.
