There is a whole body of folk songs and tunes—very good songs and tunes—that never get played anymore because a self-appointed core of super-sophisticates decided that they are "overplayed" or "oversung." I gather "hackneyed" is the original pejorative, often used without knowing that the appellation arose because the songs originally so described were listed in "The 1st Hackney Scout Troop Songbook", distributed to other scouts (and many Oz troops during WWII, according to my father's copy). Lots of songs there that helped the revival get up and running. Cheers, Rowan
