I was a great PP&M fan, attended many a concert, stuck around afterwards to talk to Peter more than once, got his autograph, sang their songs and taught their songs to others. But let's be fair. To say folk music "would never have reached the masses" without them is to ignore the contribution of the Kingston Trio, which was winning Grammy awards, placing four albums in the top ten simultaneously (which only the Beatles have equalled) and even doing TV commercials long before the first PP&M album. The Kingstons started in 1958, and PP&M in 1962. KT was on the cover of Life magazine, appeared on TV variety shows, and won themselves a gold record or two. It was precisely because of their success that rival record labels sought out or invented their own folk groups, such as the Limeliters, the Brothers Four, the Highwaymen and the Chad Mitchell Trio. Love 'em if you can, hate 'em if you must, but lets not rewrite history, ok?
