I was generally depressed, watching the wreckage of my youth, as Sir Paul McCartney turned up at the White House the other day to accept the sort of honors that used to go to the likes of Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong — you know, old guys. What made it worse was how the announcers on National Public Radio felt obliged to explain to their listners who the Beatles were and why they were important. (Are any NPR listeners too young to remember the Beatles?)
