I have just finished singing this to my three year old. (With the inclusion of a made-up verse of my own!) It was sung to my Mum by a great Uncle who lived in the Greater Manchester area and until I read this thread, I too thought it was just 'a family song'. It has now made its way to Cornwall, where my brother frequently sings it to my two nephews. Our version is: Goodnight Mr Moon, I shall have to go and leave you. Goodnight Mr Moon, I'll come again and see you soon And when I'm asleep Through the window pane you'll peep And I'll wake up- And call out- Goodnight, Mr Moon. Ni night Mr Moon fans! xx
