As of 2008, the sleeping car doors do lock from inside. You get ventilation by opening the carriage window. Only the top portion opens and then only about 5 inches. Certainly not enough for anyone to climb in - like all smokers, I tried to stick my head out for a smoke and it wouldn't fit through. So you'll be safe while you sleep as long as the door is locked from inside. Have a great trip Dave
