In the early 1970s I rediscovered Fred Stanley, who was a guitarist/vocalist back in the late 1920s and 30s. He made one record for Columbia: "The Tie That Binds"/"Cottage By the Sea" In the early 1930s he did a brief tour with them and had this to say in one of my interviews with him. "Back then we had no microphones or loudspeakers, so you had to pick loud so they could hear you. I used a thumb pick, but now, I don't use any picks. I never saw anyone pick a guitar like Riley Puckett. He used a steel pick on his forefinger of the right hand and got the bass run with his middle finger."
