My mother used to mention young girls who were walked out in a line and were put to work scrubbing steps to houses, pavements etc. The crime? Having a baby out of wedlock or underage. Whatever sadistic pious idiot thought of that one? I have my suspicions that the church might have been involved yet again. And this is not in the days of the Victorian Workhouse this was 30s/40s Britain in Bristol, England. Calling Sunday School, Sunday School was a stupid idea, why call it school? Why didn't they call it something else. As far as I was concerned school was for the 5 weekdays.
