This piece of cockney trad humour was recorded by Ian Whitcomb, then, I think, a student in Trinity College, Dublin, and made it to the lower reaches of the UK top twenty. Its a wonderful ditty for drunken sing-a-long and the like. I understand Ian went on to become the first professor of pop music or some such at an august establishment of book-learning in England. He is fondly remembered in Dublin as an inventive musician (among other things). |
