The first "Related thread" above has several references to Liza Carthy's version of the herring song: ("There was an old man and he came from Kinsale, sing aber um vale, sing aber o ling"... (or some such)). Anglo notes there that Banddogs (Nic Jones et al.) earlier recorded that version, noting it was the most singable they knew. Mary and I thought so too, and sang it as our one "cheerful" dying industry song. |
