Its the use of "garbled sing alongs" that I was intimating IS part of the folk process Often the discussions seem to dismiss what has happened since oral transmission has ceased to be the major way that songs are passed on. I recognise that there is a difference pre and post the decline/stop of oral transmission.
There is often a feeling that "post" oral transmission is some how lesser or "folk Lite"
I dont think it is - its more difficult to follow and changes more quickly mind you
