Hi. Jim,
I think that each HP cartridge has an embedded chip that keeps track of the usage (so i was told by tech friends). Maybe there's a way to reset the chip (a friend of mine has one for her Canon printer, chip resetter )but I am not able 'till now to find something that works on HPs.
