I've heard the "Portugese map" story with a variation: that "Canada" (wiggly line over the "n" -- what's that called again?) means "canyons" or "valleys". Or it might have been a Spanish map. They both did explorations and kept the results secret for a few centuries. Anybody know enough Portugese or Spanish to verify this?
