I just got back from the Canyon myself (there were some pretty sorry trad singers on the train, indeed, each one with a sad CD to sell) and while I can't help you with the music piece, I CAN suggest that you make time to take the shuttle bus out to the General Store at Market Plaza -- better and cheaper T-shirts, sox & stuff than at the Xanterra stores in the main area, and the Xanterra store at Market Plaza had better pottery for less than elsewhere at the Rim, perhaps due to the competition.

By the way, when they post at the Rim hotels that sunrise is at 6:15, they mean it's DONE at 6:15 -- you want to be out on Powell Point or Hopi Point at least 45 min or an hour earlier, to get the best views & photos. We were real happy watching the sunset from the front porch of the Bright Angel Inn -- and I got a great shot of about 15 tourists standing there like meerkats, all taking their photos together like some ancient ritual...
