I was given a promo of this new album by Marry Waterson & Oliver Knight just before Christmas and I'm enjoying it considerably. It's rather stark and rather wonderful, full of curiosity. At first it's a little unusual listening to someone who sounds so much like their mother (Lal Waterson, I mean obviously) but Marry is clearly an intriguing songwriter in her own right. I'm going to be watching to see how this album goes down in the mainstream press. Lal Waterson's albums, IIRC, were more or less ignored by the mainstream press upon release, whereas now, ironically, her music a much higher profile. As this album is so obviously related to Lal's music (no pun intended) I wonder if the musical climate has changed sufficiently for the mainstream to embrace it? Having said that, it's not a mainstream sounding album particularly, however good it is. I look forward to buying a "proper" finished copy and hope it contains the lyrics; they're something special I feel, to be delved into and explored.
