Django's been gone over half a century, and whatever his brilliance inspired for the good, is now tempered by a whole lot of dull music college tutored 'world gypsy jazz' which is frankly very bloated and very very boring.. I couldn't agree more. I've actually been on courses to study gypsy jazz and quickly realised that nobody can teach you to play with the passion and attack of Django. He didn't have all that theory cluttering his thinking, just played as he felt it. By approaching jazz in the mind-set of a flamenco player I think it's possible to get a sense of the style, the rest is sweat and tears, and if you're born gifted.... The Rosenberg Trio are well worth a listen to. A little clinical but very, very good.
