The date of the pantomime is not given, but the song was sung on December 26th, 1871 at Abbeystead (Lancashire) on the occasion of the Wyresdale Annual Festival. The vicar seemed to approve: "though I am a minister of religion, I am not one one of those who think innocent amusement always objectionable, but, rather, that it is sometimes desirable".
