I was reading a New Yorker article awhile back where the author stated as fact that Yahoo is not really a search engine at all -- only pages approved by Yahoo are presented, and there is a strong implication that some listings are paid for. The piece was about the founders of Google. Since then, I have rarely used anything but Google. All of the others I have tried have the strong whiff of an ulterior commercial motive -- they don't want to help me, they want to deliver me to an advertiser. Especially suspect are services like "LookSmart" that promise the "best of the Web", meaning the best tenderers of payola to LookSmart.
