Do a search for "Black Dog Blues" for a discussion of the oldest versions.

The earliest recording is likely the 1929 version by Dick Justice. You may recall hearing him if you've listened to The Anthology of American Folk Music, since his version of Henry Lee (Child Ballad no. 68) was the very first song.

The next year in 1930, Bayless Rose recorded a version of Black Dog Blues with quite a few stanzas.
