No, Fido, a lot of people are interested in getting something for nothing or we wouldn't be having this discussion. Mr. Butts started this thread with the argument that :
"... copyrights as we know them are dead, and that the wave of on-line demand will wash away the idea of copyright protection."
His statement was a call to rally behind this cause as if you have a right to avoid paying another for the fruit of his (or her) creative labors. You do not. I agree with Joe that "lyrics sites can do a lot to preserve songs and continue the 'folk process'" And I am all in favor of sites like mudcat that help to preserve the folk tradition, but in order to do so they must wait until the copyright runs out. EARL Good point about libraries. But they don't republish them, and distribute them to millions of people for free. They loan out the authorized copies to one person at a time. If they were allowed to make millions of photocopies of Mr. Kings novels and give them away to anyone that wants one the author would certainly not be able to make a living.
