variations include Pittsburgh town is a Smoky ol' Town---Pittsburgh... (by W. Guthrie) You get a line and I'll get a pole... (Crawdad Song) Tell old Bill when he gets home -- this morning... and others too... In a nutshell--- For 22 years I did these and others in school shows as a medley. Singing along all through it---I was striving to show the workings of the tradition --- how a song could change into another one to fit the changing times, the changing geography or a historical event. Then, I'd say, "Lets write a new song! Seemingly, off the top of my head, and using the first lines from some of the songs that shared this tune, I would sing: Tell old Bill when he gets home, this morning, That Froggy went a courting' and he did ride--uh huh, So you get a line and I'll get a plow, Cuz we don't care what mama don't 'low, In Pittsburg, lord God, in Pittsburgh!
