Nothing new about this. It was a mark of success over 40 years ago to build a new house, usually hacienda- style, in place of the old family home. Back then it usually went along with disparaging traditional music in favour of Irish and Western showband stuff. A generation or two earlier people were poorer, and the tokens of prosperity correspondingly smaller- the gramophone, the parlour piano and so on. But the important thing was always that Irish culture was associated with ignorance and backwardness.
