Patrick Galvin's were among the first recordings of Irish traditional song that I heard, when I was about 18. They included 'The Fair of Turloughmore' and 'Dunlavin Green'. His book, Irish songs of Resistance, which was published, first I think by WMA, and later by Oak in America, was, although the historical commentary lacked nuance and sometimes accuracy, was one of the first books I came across that made any attempt to put songs in any sort of context. Traditional song is in his debt. |
