Agreed Gnu, I prefer not to judge when giving a few bob. If someone needs a drink or some chemical, then that's what THEY need. Like you, I prefer honesty, and I often get it for some reason too, maybe I look approachable that way? So I'll buy booze for a wino if asked (it's not expensive enough for me to say "sorry, no change") "by the grace" and all that. Though as often as not, a smile and a chat is as welcome as anything. Just saying 'hello' and treating a bum the same as a "normal" person can make a difference, which of course they are! Though it's a shameful reflection of our society's values, that so many prefer to forget it.
