Alison's ABC was generated by a MIDI to ABC converter from input entered at a synthesiser keyboard - it wouldn't have been able to tell the difference between 3/4 and 6/8. Other versions of the tune have always been notated in 6/8. It comes across to me as two in a bar with definite strong and weak accents. Those words don't sound like something written in 1774 to me - kelpies? Really? I suspect a 19th century post-Walter-Scott rewrite of something older.
