Go into Claddagh Records in Cecilia Street and they'll tell you where to find good sessions; talk to them about music a little bit first, so they don't think you want the kind of shamrock-strewn noise some tourists like.

As for Hughes's, yes, it's in an area that can be rough. As for not pretty, well, it's a proper Irish pub, not an "Irish Pub", so it has mahogany and unvarnished wooden floors and scruffy old seats. Good music, too.

There are often sessions in Whelan's in Wexford Street, and also in Mother Redcaps, though Mother Redcaps are in love with their sound system and even put Cormac Breatnach's beautiful but piercingly loud already flute music on speaker.
