It's now 5.45pm in the UK, and properly dark. The first trick-or-treaters arrived at 4.15pm, before it was even dark, and one of them didn't even have a costume. Pulled his hoodie over his head and claimed to be a zombie! Next up, though, were two little girls who looked like Disney fairytale princesses, but were apprently witches whose hats had kept blowing off.

We've got a miix of snack packs of raisins, and jelly sweets to give them. Jellies are winning hands down.

We have a "hamd of Fatima" door knocker of the kind you see all over Spain and Italy. I don't know whether you see them in the Latin countries the other side of the Atlantic. A brass hand grasping a ball. One young caller a few years ago asked nervously: "Is that a hand on your door?" I told him it was all that was left of a previous trick-or-treater.

He still came back the next year. In fact he's just been again now, dressed as a skeleton and acoompanied by what, apparently, was a "devil fairy." Eh?
