Not sure if this old thread is still relevant, but in addition to Phil Cunningham and Jimmy Keane, already mentioned, the piano accordion is overwhelmingly the most common instrument among those who play for Irish step dancing competitions ("feisianna" [spellings vary], which is the plural of "feis", which is pronounced "fesh".)
