GUEST,Mike in San Antonio Lyr Req: There's a Man that Comes to Our House (38) Lyr Add:THE MAN DON'T COME TO OUR HOUSE ANYMORE 03 Feb 12

Different versions of this one probably exist, but I transcribed these words directly from the old 78 [which you can hear at the Internet Archive]. Someone wrote "36" on the flip side, so it may have cost 36c when my mother bought it many years ago.

THE MAN DON'T COME TO OUR HOUSE ANYMORE
(Tucker/Somerville)
As recorded by Tommy Tucker Time, with vocal chorus by Kerwin Somerville.
Okeh 5717 (Matrix W 28039), 1940.

CHORUS: Oh, the man don't come to our house anymore.
He used to come around and knock upon the door.
We still live where we always did before,
But the man don't come to our house anymore.

1. The man that came to our house that used to bring the ice,
He was the nicest ice man that ever brought our ice,
But he came around so often when my papa wasn't there
That Pop put out the "No Ice" sign and bought a Frigidaire! CHORUS

2. The man that came to our house to bring us eggs and butter,
He couldn't talk so very good; he always had to stutter.
It seemed a shame he had to go; I always wondered why.
I guess because it took so long for him to say "Goodbye." CHORUS

3. The man that came to our house that used to bring the milk
And walked right in the kitchen 'cause he talked as smooth as silk,
He liked my mama very much and brought her a corsage,
And now we've got a Jersey cow that lives in our garage. CHORUS

4. Now when I get big and get to go to school,
I want to learn a few things so I won't be a fool,
But before I learn my A-B-Cs or how much is a pound,
I'm gonna ask the teacher why the man don't come around. CHORUS

Easy, Lad; easy!

TAG: I wonder why—wonder why—why the man don't come to our house anymore.

[The same recording was also released on another label: Conqueror 9593.]
