Two things occur to me here. First is that the difference between a straight and a swung rhythm is in the way beats are subdivided. In a straight rhythm beats are divided in halves, as in 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +. In a swung rhythm beats are divided into three parts, as in 1 + + 2 + + 3 + + 4 + + If you are strumming these you would strum the first one down on the number and up on the +. The second one you would strum down on the number, stay down on the first + and strum up on the last +. The other thing is syncopation. This is done by playing a note one division of the beat before it is expected.
