Mark Dowding Who Remembers the Star Inn, Salford? (20) RE: WHO REMEMBERS THE STAR INN, SALFORD? 07 Jul 12

I've got quite a few recordings of nights at the Star from 1982 to 1984. They were made with the permission of the guest on the night but include most of the floor singers that were on. They make an interesting listen. The list that I have is as follows:

Pete Smith & Jeanny Denny - May 12th 1982
Howard Bond -May 26th 1982
Black Edds – October 5th 83
Dick Miles – October 19th 83
Two Beggarmen – November 9th 83
Hollering Pot – December 7th 83
Steve Turner – January 25th 84
Martin Carthy – February 8th 84
Bram Taylor – February 15th 84
Gentleman Soldier – February 29th 84
Wits End – May 9th 84
Stanley Accrington – May 16th 84
Paul Downes – May 30th 84
Harry Ogden – June 6th 84

Ronnie the potman appears on most tapes urging everyone to drink up and go home. There was no running on past 11-00 till all hours and there's one tape where the guest ony had time for three songs in the second half before we had to finish!

I was also making recordings at the Unicorn in Manchester which was Harry Boardman's club. These were mainly singers nights but the quality of singers and residents made it like a concert every week. Very occasionally Harry would have a guest and I remember Sara Grey, Gorton Tank and the Village Band doing a full night as a guest or someone like Pete Coe, Malcolm Ramskill and Mick Heywood would pop in and do a longer set.

All good stuff!
Cheers
Mark
