campfire BS: Technical question: How do you vote? (29) RE: BS: Technical question: How do you vote? 10 Nov 00

In Wisconsin, you can register at the polls. You need a driver's liscence or utility bill with your address, or someone to vouch for you.

I was already registered, so I went directly to the ballot table. I did not have to produce ID, I just gave my address. Then the election person asked if my name was Dawn. (So in other words, if I knew that my elderly female neighbor was not going to vote, I could have gone again and given her address. They would have asked me if I was Millie; if I said yes, I could vote again.) We did not have to sign by our name, we were just checked off by the poll worker.

We are given a ballot, which we take to the little "privacy booth" and complete the arrow for the desired candidates, as described above. Then you walk across the room again, and feed the ballot into a little machine which I assume counts the arrows. There are about 15 booths, and one little machine to feed the finished ballots into. The complaint I have was that we did not get the little folder to carry the ballot in (we have in the past), so anyone who wanted to could look at your ballot as you carried it across the room or waited in the line to feed the counting machine.

The one good thing - a woman in front of me in the "feed" line had mismarked her ballot somehow and the machine rejected it. The poll workers destroyed her ballot and gave her another (and told her to color inside the lines this time) with no hassle.

When I first started voting, we had the polling booths with the little flippers by each name, and a big lever that you pulled when you were finished. That cast your ballot and opened the curtain for the next person. The problem then was that once you closed the curtain behind you, you couldn't open it (to perhaps ask a question) without casting a vote - even if you hadn't actually voted.
