Seems to me the NCAA has created a penalty of whole cloth for a violation not actually in its rulebooks. I abhor the crimes and the coverups committed, but the NCAA should give up the posturing and admit that what happened is not within their jurisdiction. Supposedly they are punishing a vague "failure of institutional control" that happened fourteen years ago... so where was the governing body (NCAA) then? They pretend that they are somehow contributing to a solution when by their own logic they should be subject to penalties themselves. As far as the statue and the name on the library: the wise practice is to never to confer such permanent honors on a living person. No matter how sainted they may seem, you never know what they will do in the future. A debate next year over whether to put up a Joe Pa statue would have been much less traumatic and embarrassing to the university than the debate over whether to take one down has been.
