For those too young, or not near enough geographically, to know the story, here is a Wikipedia entry to give some background. I have seen somewhere a recording relating to the failed rescue, with the radio traffic overlaid. The moment when contact is lost stays in my mind and reduces me to tears. I expect it can all be found on U-tube or similar, but I can't do that right now.
